South LA Pocket Park Gets a Facelift Hoover Recreation Center got a $150,000 grant to improve and beautify its park. Thanks to the LA Parks Foundation, the Werner Family Foundation, USC's School of Architecture's Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture, and City Councilman Ed Reyes, the simple additions of new grass, walking trails, and exercise machines make the park a whole lot more attractive and pleasant to use. Historian reflects on a changed Compton Stanford Professor Al Camarillo wants people to know his hometown, Compton, is more than the stereotypes and crime statistics that have plagued the city. In his forthcoming book he traces his family’s footprint in the city to 1914, and reveals that while much has changed throughout 100 years and since the time he grew up in the 50s, the city still represents a place where newcomers seek opportunity. From a majority white community to one that is primarily black, to now one that is mostly Latino, Compton has endured dramatic racial shifts. But by taking lessons from the past, Camarillo says, the community can build bridges today.
