Board of Supervisors will partner with the University of California to Reopen MLK Hospital The storied Martin Luther King Jr. hospital in Willowbrook is one step closer to reopening. The hospital closed in 2007 after life-threatening mistakes were uncovered and the hospital failed an inspection by federal regulators. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan to partner with the University of California to reopen what they're calling the new MLK hospital. Families question Sheriff Department’s deadly record Family members of three slain men gathered at the Board of Supervisor's meeting to call for an investigation into a string of deadly shootings by Sheriff Deputies. Violence in Los Angeles is down, but fatal shooting by Sheriff Deputies has increased. There have been 13 deadly shootings this year, up from five in 2008. Many of the men were shot in the back as they ran from the police. Their families are not satisfied with the official explanations, and think the Sheriff Department needs special investigation. Last week, Sheriff Lee Baca said he would ensure his department completes their own investigations into the shootings within 90 days. (posted 9/22/09) By Timothy Beck Werth
Puppy mill crackdown A new motion approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will regulate local dog breeders and kennels. After a recent increase in cases of over-breeding puppies, Supervisor Mike Antonovich introduced a plan that would unify the county's efforts to identify and shut down puppy mills. Hiring freeze The Chief Executive Office of the LA County Board of Supervisors, William Fujioka, proposed a hiring freeze for most LA County departments. The hiring freeze would apply to all departments except medical and emergency services. The proposal was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors, and they will make additional changes to the proposal in the next few meetings.
